What is Aluminum Silicon Carbide?Silicon carbide can be found in common grinding stones, wheels, and blades. It is harder than corundum but less hard than cubic boron-nitride (CBN), boron-carbide and diamond. This ceramic material is a good substrate for composites because of its high modulus, and thermal conductivity. The silicon carbide in AlSiC material (aluminum silicon carbide), is of this type. This silicon carbide is used in composite materials to provide high thermal conductivity.

In industrial manufacturing silicon carbide is first made into preforms (ceramics) that are shaped like the final products. This preform differs from normal silicon carbide ceramics because it has many micropores. Special equipment is used to hydraulically cast the aluminum into the micropores in a vacuum environment. The aluminum silicon carbide material has the advantage that it combines ceramics with the low thermal expand coefficient and thermal conductivity of pure aluminium, as well as the strength of cast-iron. It is more efficient than tungsten and copper. It is also able to form large-sized, special-shaped components that tungsten can't.

In the common method of low temperature oxidation sintering, a thick layer of silica will be formed on the surface silicon carbide. This will affect the thermal conduction of the material so that it cannot reach more than 180W/mK at room temperatures (regardless of how much is claimed). Our self-developed process for manufacturing ceramic preforms has a silicon dioxide content that is only 1/8 the amount of the conventional method. However, our product's thermal conductivity is greater than 240W/mK.
