What exactly is Sodium silicate?
Sodium silicateis commonly referred to as paohua kali, is a kind of inorganic substance it's aqueous solution usually referred to a sodium silicate, is a kind of mineral adhesive. In chemical terms, it's Na2O*nSiO2. It is a soluble , inorganic silicate which has a variety of applications. Sodium silicate that is soluble in the water is colorless. It is slightly transparent or translucent glass body, commonly used as fillermaterial, fabric fire retardant, and adhesive.
What is Sodium Silicate used for?
Soaps and detergent
Silicates of sodium are able to improve surface effects, like wetting the surface with organic surfactants (reducing tension on the surface) and helps to keep small dirt or oil particles from being absorbed by the detergent or helping to clean dirt from the surface.
The acidity of sodium silicate allows it neutralize the acidity of soils as well as facilitate the emulsification and the dispersion of protein.
Packaging
The use of sodium silicate as a coating may increase the strength of the cardboard and increase their resistance to humidity fire or pests. Silicate is also employed as an oil repellent all by itself.
Sodium silicate is a good choice as a primer for the application of auxiliary materials like paraffins, naphthalene chloride, wax, gum as well as nitrocellulose, varnish and other cardboard coatings. It fills the pores of the cardboard and reduces the water absorption of the material, consequently reducing the amount topcoat that is required.
Construction
Soluble silicate could be used as cement binder. When Portland is mixed with cement components, they undergo chemical reactions to make substances with strong bonding properties. It can also be used to improve the durability of concrete.
Mining industry
Soluble silicate is employed in many mineral enrichment processes. The most important use of sodium silicate in flotation of ore is as an antiflocculant . This is used to disperse unwanted siliceous substances. Only a small amount silicate in a concentration comparable to that used in cleaning operations is required. Silicate's ability to create a sodium ion layer on the surface of the particle is essential for preparing the surface for specific separation. Silicate from sodium assists in preventing damage to the ball and reduce fatigue in the grinding mill.
Treatment of water
Aqueous solution of anionic silica dilute created by soluble silicate could help to prevent corrosion of metal surface.
As an ingredient in water, dissolved SiO2 has the ability to stop corrosion of metal storage tanks as well as distribution lines. It helps prevent the corrosion of pipelines and pumps caused by acidic water (for instance, water from mine drainage) Reduces corrosion during grinding on ball rods and prevents corrosion of equipment in process, as an ingredient in agglomeration, spray drying or dry mixed detergent formulations and parts made of metal in disheswashing and laundry equipment. It is a component of the liquid that forms part of the 'permanent' automobile cooling system. To be used as an additive in water treatment chemicals in boilers and cooling towers.
