However, it wasn't without the risk. The arsenic powder wreaked havoc on capillaries and caused skin to become pink.

Forms of arsenic powder

Arsenic is one of the elements naturally present in the Earth's crust, and it shares many of the properties of other metals. It has both organic and inorganic forms and can be often found in greater quantities in particular geographic areas. Organic forms of arsenic have carbon, whereas inorganic forms are not. Because of this, they are unable to dissolve in water.

Arsenic poisoning can be a serious medical condition that can cause irreparable harm to organs and systems. Most commonly, the symptom that is experienced is gastroenteritis. It is characterised by abdominal pain or nausea and vomiting. It begins shortly after the intake and usually disappears within 12 hours. In severe cases, however, symptoms may persist for days. Arsenic affects the gastrointestinal mucosa, causing it to degenerate and shred off.

History of arsenic-based powder

Arsenic has a long and poor history. It was first recognized by Albertus of the Roman Empire in 1206 but was not identified as a chemical element until a few centuries later. Chaucer first spoke of arsenic around 1386. The use of arsenic in dyes and paints became more widespread after the Industrial Revolution.

Other indicators of exposure are headache, dizziness or chest pain.

Chelating agents for arsenic poisoning are available in a broad spectrum of uses and have their own pharmacological bases. There are several adverse reactions of chelating drugs, most of them are dose-related.
