What is 316 Stainless Steel?

Sometimes, alloys are added to steel in order to enhance the desired properties. A stainless steel that is of marine grade commonly referred to as Type 316, is resistant to certain kinds of acidic environments.

There are many types that stainless steel 316 comes in. The most common are the L, F, , and H variants. Each variant is different and is utilized for an entirely different purpose. L means that 316L steel is a carbon content below 316.

for 316 as well as 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality

While they are similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both offer better resistance to corrosion and are more durable at high temperatures. They are not hardened through heat treatment. They are able to be easily stretched and shaped.

There is a difference in 316L and the 316 version of HTML. Stainless Steel

The stainless steel 316L has less carbon content than the 316. Even with its reduced carbon level, 316L is very similar to 316 in almost every way. It is priced similarly, while both are extremely durable as well as corrosion-resistant, making them the ideal choice for stressful situations.

However, for projects that require a significant amount of welding is a preferred choice because 316 more susceptible to corrosion from welding as compared to an 316L (corrosion inside the weld). However, 316L can be annealed, allowing it to resist the attenuation of welding. 316L is also a very appropriate stainless steel for high temperatures, high corrosion applications This is why it’s so popular in construction and Marine projects.

None of 316 nor 316L is the most economical option. The 304 is comparable to the 304L however the cost is less. Both are not as durable as the 317 or 317L, which have more molybdenum and have better overall corrosion resistance.
